Sometimes, an endoscope can be used to remove small foreign objects that are lodged in the stomach. X-rays or an ultrasound will help identify the location of the obstruction. If your pet has a gastrointestinal blockage, he will have to be hospitalized and undergo surgery.

Additionally, a new dietary plan may be recommended. If the veterinarian team diagnosed an underlying disease or condition a treatment plan appropriate for your pet will be discussed with you. The veterinarian may also suggest and recommend a dog behaviorist for pets that may not have been not been properly socialized or have extreme behavior disorders. Provide your pet with plenty of chew toys. Using bitter tasting spray on the objects he is attracted to may deter him. Leash walking your pet will help prevent him from eating rocks and feces. It will be necessary to keep your pet away from the non-food objects he has been ingesting. There are natural herb remedies that may help your dog with anxiety issues and have a calming effect on him. If it is determined that pica is due to behavior issues, your veterinarian may recommend increasing physical activities for your pet. They are renowned for their highly-developed haymaking behavior.Treatment of pica in dogs will depend if it is a behavior or an underlying medical condition. Pikas are generalist herbivores, feeding on the stems and leaves of various grasses, forbs, and small shrubs. The average natural life span for a pika is three years. Young of the year experience particularly low overwinter survival, which constitutes the major source of mortality. Young pikas grow surprisingly quickly, reaching adult size after only 40 to 50 days. Although some reports suggest that they may be capable of producing a second litter (the other North America pika species produces two litters a summer), this has not been confirmed. Female collared pikas generally give birth to one litter a year. Litters of one to four are cared for by the mother. The young are born blind and nearly hairless after a 30-day gestation period. Female pikas can breed and produce young at about one year of age. Individuals tend to mate with their nearest neighbors, in a system that is considered to be ‘facultatively (functionally) monogamous.’ The peak of the breeding season occurs in May and early June as snow begins to melt and the first green plants of the season start to appear. During the spring breeding season, their aggressiveness and sense of territoriality are at a low-a marked contrast to most territorial mammals. Unlike their Asian relatives, who inhabit and defend territories as mated pairs, North American pikas are individually territorial. When fully grown, they weigh about 5 ounces (140 g range 110–220 g). There is no discernable size difference between males and females. Pikas are highly alert, possessing excellent hearing and vision. Their sharp, curved claws help them climb from rock to rock with ease. Pikas have fur-covered feet, but bare toe pads.

A distinct grayish patch on the shoulder and neck forms the "collar" from which the collared pika derives its name, appearing in definite contrast to the white fur on its chest and stomach. Pikas have stocky bodies, short legs, large round ears, and are almost tailless.

Fossil pika remains and fossilized pika scats are known from several locations in Alaska, including Cape Deceit and the uplands near Fairbanks. In North America, they also are called "rock rabbits" and "coneys." All but two of the 30 living species of pika occur in Asia, where they probably originated. The word pika is derived from the Siberian name for this animal, puka. Closely related to hares and rabbits, pikas are charismatic but lesser known members of the order Lagomorpha.
